Is a New Fatwa Paving the Way for Iran’s Nuclear Program
*Is a New Fatwa Paving the Way for Iran’s Nuclear Program?*
The direct military confrontation between Iran and Israel, after years of verbal clashes, threats, and security attacks against each other, continues to draw global attention.
Recently, *Foreign Affairs* published an article attempting to analyze the dimensions of the 12-day imposed war against Iran.
The author argues that this war has imparted three important lessons for Iran:
First: Iran must develop a nuclear bomb as quickly as possible.
Second: Iran should expect attacks from the world’s major military powers.
and Finally, Iran should not wait for the results of diplomacy.
Apparently, the West is closing off all diplomatic avenues.
However, by examining Iran’s religious and social history, one can conclude that a change in fatwas, or the issuance of a secondary fatwa, is not unexpected.
The current conditions have reached a point where Iran’s Supreme Leader, as the country’s religious authority, might alter the previous fatwa forbidding the production of nuclear weapons, potentially granting permission to manufacture them in order to protect the lives of Iranian citizens.
