Hosting U.S. military bases has long been the strategy of Persian Gulf Arab states to secure their own territories.

By relying on American military power, they hoped to purchase immunity for themselves.

Beyond covering the logistical costs of U.S. bases, these states are also bound to buy a wide range of American weapons—large and small—many of which are operated by non-local personnel.

Yet, Israel’s surprise attack on a Hamas office in Doha, backed and supported by Washington, revealed that the United States is not only an unreliable partner in times of crisis, but, if necessary, can turn the very soil of its allies into a battlefield against them.

This blow was a sobering wake-up call for the Persian Gulf states. They now fully realize that no trust can be placed in imported security—especially the American kind.
