CNN reported that the United States has shown reluctance to condemn the Kremlin's aggression on the third anniversary of its brutal invasion of Ukraine last Monday, by choosing new friends at the United Nations, including its long-time rivals, namely Russia and North Korea.
CNN reported that the unprecedented events at the United Nations headquarters were even better than those at the White House, where Trump and his French counterpart, Emmanuel Macron, shook hands and exchanged pleasantries, highlighting a new divide between the two sides of the Atlantic.
The CNN report added that Trump's confusing approach to Putin and disengagement from Ukraine has disrupted old alliances and set off a competition between US allies and adversaries to shape the peace deal he intends to make with the Russian leader.
Tensions between Europe and the United States have continued to escalate, after leaders of several European Union countries defended Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, who recently lashed out at US President Donald Trump.
The European leaders, including those from Britain, Germany, and the Czech Republic, have announced their support for Zelensky after US President Donald Trump called him an "unelected dictator."
In a message he posted on his Truth Social network on Wednesday, Trump accused the Ukrainian leader of mismanaging the conflict with Russia and misusing US financial aid.
Trump has claimed that Zelensky "rejects the election" and that he is "low in the polls in Ukraine." Analysts believe that Trump's strong message may have been prompted by accusations from Zelensky that the US President is drowning in a sea of Russian disinformation.
This comes just days after European Parliament members said that the continent cannot continue to rely entirely on the United States for defense; and called for strengthening Europe's defense capabilities while continuing to support Ukraine.
Experts say that the European Union is actively pursuing an end to defense dependence, at a time when the new US administration is witnessing a shift in foreign policy priorities.
