EU Calls for ICC Action Against Netanyahu and Galant

The European Union’s Foreign Policy Commissioner, Josep Borrell, has urged the enforcement of the International Criminal Court's (ICC) decision against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant. Speaking on Tuesday during the G7 meeting near Rome, Borrell emphasized Europe’s commitment to upholding international law and the ICC's rulings.

“It is impossible to accept the International Criminal Court when it is against Putin, and oppose it when it is against Netanyahu,” Borrell stated. His comments followed the ICC’s issuance of arrest warrants for Netanyahu and Gallant on November 22, citing alleged war crimes and crimes against civilians in Gaza.

Borrell also addressed the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Lebanon, asserting that Israel has no valid reason to reject the deal, as it includes comprehensive security guarantees. He criticized Israel's actions in Lebanon, pointing out that 100,000 homes have been destroyed in Israeli attacks and stressing the need for international pressure to ensure Israel adheres to the agreement.

The call for ICC action comes amid heightened scrutiny of Israel’s military campaigns in Gaza and Lebanon, which have drawn widespread condemnation for their humanitarian impact. Netanyahu’s government has faced growing international criticism, with several leaders urging accountability for actions against Palestinian and Lebanese civilians.

Borrell’s remarks highlight the EU’s position on applying international justice consistently, a stance that could increase tensions with Israel as debates over accountability and ceasefire compliance continue.
