EU foreign policy chief warns: EU's future 'at risk'

The European Union's outgoing Head of Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell, has hinted that the future of the union is at risk due to facing many conflicts at the same time, and emphasized that the EU can no longer rely on the United States for its protection.

Borrell has given a frightening picture of the state of affairs in the world in connection with the publication of a collection of his speeches and articles entitled 'Europe in the Arch of Fire.' He has listed the conflicts in Ukraine, Gaza and Africa as among the important issues that threaten the security of the world.

"The events that we have had to face in the last several months - unfortunately - have confirmed an early diagnosis: Europe is in danger," said the EU's foreign policy chief in a statement posted on his office's website.

Borrel has continued to point out by saying: "Our geopolitical environment is deteriorating, and conflicts and conflicts are increasingly approaching our doorstep. From Ukraine to the Middle East, through the South Caucasus, to the Horn of Africa or the Sahel. All this is happening against expectations, due to and increasingly uncertain the future commitment of the United States in relation to European security".

The top EU diplomat noted that Washington's commitment "to the security of Europe as a whole has become uncertain for the future," due to the re-election of Donald Trump.

"Our well-being and our future cannot continue to depend on what the American voters in the Midwest feel every four years," Borrell said while urging the member states of the European Union to strengthen their own defense.
