Ursula von der Leyen threatened today that "the US tariffs on steel and aluminium will not go unanswered", warning that this move would be met with harsh retaliation from the European Union (EU).
According to Associated Press agency quoted the German politician as saying, "The European Union will take action to protect its economic interests. We will protect our workers, our businesses and our consumers."
"A tariff is a tax and it is harmful to trade and even more costly for consumers. Unfair tariffs against the EU will not go unanswered and strong, proportionate countermeasures will be taken," von der Leyen said.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz also said in his speech to his country's parliament: "If the United States leaves us no other choice, the European Union will react with unity."
"Ultimately, trade wars always harm the well-being of the parties involved," Scholz added.
Yesterday, the French President and Foreign Minister also reacted to the consequences of the US imposing a 25% tariff on steel and aluminum imports.
Asked if he would "confront" Trump over the tariffs, Emmanuel Macron replied: "I've done it before and I'll do it again."
