The Minister of Foreign Affairs of France has said that there is an urgency to sign a security agreement between Western countries and Russia after the end of the war in Ukraine. Catherine Colonna said in an interview with Le Monde newspaper that: "When the war in Ukraine ends, it will be important for the leaders of Western countries to coordinate a security structure that respects the interests of Russia." This position of the French government goes against the promise of the Paris government to support Kiev at any cost. The Minister of Foreign Affairs of France added that: "The facts, history and geography all show that Russia is in the European continent. So we need to find a way to re-establish a stable security system based on the interests and peace of all parties." French President Emmanuel Macron has insisted since last year that Europe should discuss "how to bail out Russia when it returns to the negotiating table".
