NATO itself currently depends heavily on US nuclear warheads which are stationed at six military air bases in Belgium, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Turkey. The center-right German head of the European People's Party, EPP, Manfred Weber calls for Europeans to prepare for war by thinking of themselves even without US support. For that to happen, he argues, the old continent must build its own nuclear umbrella. The prospect of Donald Trump's return to the White House reinforces his conviction even more. The former Republican president of the USA has openly shown his skepticism towards NATO, even threatening, according to Politico, that he would not come to the defense of Europe if it were to be attacked. "We love NATO, but we also need to be strong enough to defend ourselves without it in the time of Trump," said Weber. "Regardless of who wins the elections in America, Europe must be able to stand on its own in terms of foreign policy and be able to defend itself independently," he added. According to Weber, "one must accept the reality that when the moment comes that the situation becomes critical, the nuclear option is indeed decisive."
