Horror in abundance
With around 100 decrees, Donald Trump is getting his reorganization of the USA rolling. What is in the decrees - and what are their prospects of success?
The USA is withdrawing from the Paris Climate Agreement. US President Donald Trump announced this to the United Nations on Monday after taking the oath of office. The announced withdrawal will take effect in January 2026, as the agreement stipulates a one-year deadline.
The Paris Agreement was adopted in 2016. In it, the signatory states commit to limiting global warming to below 2 degrees and, if possible, below 1.5 degrees. The USA had already withdrawn from the Paris Agreement during Trump's first presidency from 2017 to 2021.
In addition to withdrawing from the Paris Agreement, Trump also stopped the US contribution to financial support for poorer countries for climate protection and adaptation. According to its own figures, the USA contributed just under 10 billion US dollars in 2023, around twice as much as Germany.
The USA's climate protection ambitions will probably also be lower under Trump. However, Tim Bosch emphasizes that the US states have considerable influence on climate protection. “States governed by Democrats will continue to drive climate protection forward.”
