Irish Prime Minister: EU has lost confidence
The Prime Minister of Ireland said that the European Union has lost credibility due to its inability to take a firm and united position on events in the Gaza Strip.
eo Varadkar told reporters in Brussels on Thursday, ahead of the EU meeting, that Ireland would work to support Palestine to strengthen the summit's final statement. He said the European position on events in the Gaza Strip had changed over the past two months and moved closer to Ireland's long-standing position in support of Palestine, and added: "The European Union has lost confidence due to our failure to take a strong and united position on the Palestinian issue and Israel." The Irish Prime Minister noted the inclination of European and American youth towards the Palestinian cause and regarded the issue as an important political and social development in the Western bloc. Varadkar continued: "European leaders must recognize this problem; we need stronger language in the summit's final statement, which, in addition to condemning terrorism, calls for a humanitarian ceasefire (in the Gaza Strip) and justice for the Palestinians." The last EU summit in 2023 started today in Brussels. The war in the Gaza Strip is one of the main topics of this summit. European Council President Charles Michel wrote a few days ago in a letter to European leaders: “Developments in West Asia will be one of the important topics on the agenda of our summit. We must demand the release of all prisoners and serious attention to the alarming humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip." The European Union, without condemning the barbaric crimes committed by the Zionist regime in the Gaza Strip, is trying to temporarily stop the conflict in order to transfer humanitarian aid to the strip.
