Macron: Ukraine still has a long way to go to join the European Union

The French President stated that Ukraine still has a long way to go to join the European Union. On Thursday, the European Council agreed to start negotiations on Ukraine and Moldova's accession to the European Union. This agreement was made after the Hungarian Prime Minister, Viktor Orbán, as an opponent of Ukraine's membership in the European Union, refused to vote for the start of negotiations on the accession of Kyiv and Chisinau to this regional organization. French President Emmanuel Macron warned Friday (15/12/2023) that Ukraine's membership in the European Union still has a long way to go. "Ukraine must not violate European Union rules," Macron said. "The EU must fundamentally change its laws before Kyiv joins, and Ukraine's recognition must not create new problems for other EU members," stressed the French President. Ursula Von der Leyen, head of the European Commission, who is one of Kyiv's staunchest supporters in the European Union, stressed last week that the European Council would only vote on the start of accession negotiations and not on accession itself. Ukraine and Moldova's accession process to the European Union will take a long time. The head of the European Commission previously announced that Ukraine's future is in the hands of the European Union.(PH)
