Prime Minister-designate says Greenland will never be sold, wants Europe to stand with it to confront Trump

Greenland's Prime Minister-designate Jens-Frederik Nielsen has called on European countries to stand with him and stressed that the territory is not for sale.

Nielsen explained this to reporters and emphasized: "stand with us and make it clear that Greenland is not for sale and will never be sold. Greenland is run by the people of Greenland and that will never change."

About 1,000 Greenlanders protested on Saturday in the capital Nuuk, protesting recent remarks by US President Donald Trump about their country's independence.

Leaders of the Demokraatit, Naleraq, Inuit Ataqatigiit, Siumut and Atassut parties said in a joint statement that Trump's behavior was "unacceptable."

Last Thursday, the US president questioned Denmark's sovereignty over the island and said: "Denmark is so far away and has nothing to do with it. What happened? A boat arrived there 200 years ago or something. They say they have a right to it, I don't know if that's true. I really don't think so."

Trump added that he has been in contact with Denmark and Greenland, and said: "We have to do something" to get the island.
