Saudi Arabia at the UN, yes to the creation of an independent Palestinian state
Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan, in his speech to the United Nations General Assembly, called for the creation of an independent Palestinian state for security in the West Asian region. The head of diplomacy of the kingdom during his speech at the 78th session of the General Assembly in New York was keen to underline that lasting peace and stability in the region will not be achieved without reaching a just solution to the difficult Palestinian issue.“The stability of the region is based on a just and comprehensive solution for the Palestinian cause,” he said, and “on the creation of a Palestinian state based on the 1967 borders with East al-Quds as its capital.” Bin Farhan said that his country “rejects and condemns all unilateral steps that constitute a clear violation of international laws and that neutralize regional and international peace efforts.”“
This solution must be based on resolutions of international legitimacy and the Arab Peace Initiative, which guarantee the right of the Palestinian people to establish their own independent state in accordance with the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital,” he said. In 1993, the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) and Israel signed the Oslo Accords, which they gave the Palestinians a form of civil government. The negotiations, however, did not lead to a peace agreement leading to the creation of a Palestinian state. The US-sponsored Palestinian-Israeli peace negotiations collapsed in April 2014, when Tel Aviv refused to stop construction settlements and to release Palestinian detainees imprisoned before 1993. The Saudi diplomat reiterated his rejection and condemnation of all unilateral actions, considered clear violations of all international laws, by the kingdom.
