The government of Ilham Aliyev sharply criticized the recent statement by the Russian Foreign Ministry on the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh. The Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry, reacting to a recent official statement by the Russian Foreign Ministry in connection with the situation around Nagorno-Karabakh, announced that this statement does not comply with the Declaration on Allied Cooperation between the two countries.

The statement of the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry also says that the statement of the Russian Foreign Ministry dated June 15, 2023, which comments on the trilateral statement on Karabakh dated midnight on November 9, 2020 and the peace process between Baku and Yerevan, does not comply with the Declaration on Mutual Cooperation between Azerbaijan and the Russian Federation. This position of the Moscow authorities is disappointing.

The Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry's statement was published at a time when the Russian Foreign Ministry expressed concern about the official position on the situation around Nagorno-Karabakh, pointing to a worsening situation for 120,000 residents of this region. The Russian Foreign Ministry also appealed to the officials of the government of Ilham Aliyev with a request to take immediate measures to unblock the Lachin corridor as soon as possible and resume the unhindered movement of citizens along it. The Baku government reacted to the official statement of the Russian Foreign Ministry at a time when Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev on Saturday, July 15, once again held an almost three-hour meeting with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan in the presence of European Council President Charles Michel in Brussels.

Earlier, after the NATO summit, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan demanded the withdrawal of Russian peacekeepers from Nagorno-Karabakh by 2025. Turkish and Baku, as well as Arab and Israeli media are also conducting a massive propaganda campaign against the presence of Russia in the Caucasus and especially in Nagorno-Karabakh. Earlier, after the NATO summit in Lithuania, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan demanded the withdrawal of Russian peacekeepers from Nagorno-Karabakh by 2025.

As part of this, the media of Baku, Ankara, as well as the Arab and Israeli media also waged a massive propaganda campaign against the presence of Russia in the South Caucasus, especially in Nagorno-Karabakh. Such propaganda is carried out in a situation where the Armenian authorities are trying to achieve more reliable security guarantees for Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh by internationalizing the conflict with Azerbaijan.

The well-known Armenian political scientist Tigran Grigoryan, speaking about this, emphasized: “As for the settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and the inclusion of this region populated by Armenians into Azerbaijan, it should be clearly understood that without real security guarantees, without the creation of these mechanisms, it is pointless to talk about the security or safe life of Armenians. in Nagorno-Karabakh within the framework of the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan".

Following the growing provocations against the government of Ilham Aliyev by Turkey, the Israeli regime, the United States, Britain and the EU to fulfill the plans of the West and NATO in the Caucasus under the pretext of "establishing peace between Baku and Yerevan," the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry issued a statement accusing Russia in the failure to fulfill Moscow's obligations to ensure peace between Baku and Yerevan and the withdrawal of the Armenian armed forces from Nagorno-Karabakh. These ups and downs are taking place at a time when the authorities in Baku and Yerevan, with the participation of the European Union and the United States, are seeking negotiations to resolve bilateral disputes. Meanwhile, Russia, as their traditional mediator, is involved in the war with Ukraine.

Summarizing the existing tensions in the region, it seems that the officials of the government of Ilham Aliyev, in order to engage in open conflict with Russia, have to a certain extent reduced diplomatic and political tensions with Iran in order to use all their attention and force in the diplomatic and media conflict with Russia. Earlier, independent political circles suggested that, given the current situation, the possibility of secession of Azerbaijan and even Turkey is not far off. While Russia is the only hope of the governments of Baku and Ankara to put an end to the ongoing disputes over Nagorno-Karabakh, the Baku authorities have begun to provoke foreigners to war with Russia and threaten her. Due to this immature approach, Russia-linked forces in Baku are advising the Aliyev government to refrain from a serious conflict with Moscow so that the Ilham Aliyev government does not enter a dangerous phase of tension with Russia and is safe from damage and loss from such tension.
