However, the President of the ECOWAS Commission, Omar Touray, has said that political sanctions targeting specific individuals in Niger will continue to be implemented. The military rulers who took power in Niger following the overthrow of President Ahmed Bazoum in July 2023 In December 2023, ECOWAS with 15 member countries officially suspended Niger's membership in the regional union, several months after the military coup, until constitutional order is restored in the country. Niger, along with Burkina Faso and Mali, announced on January 28 that they have decided to withdraw from ECOWAS and sent an official statement to the community the following day. Article 91 of the agreement of the economic community of West African countries states that member countries will continue to fulfill their obligations for a period of one year after notifying their withdrawal. But the three countries, all of which are currently led by military regimes that came to power through coups, have decided not to wait until then.
