The reaction of the Chinese Foreign Ministry to the trilateral meeting at Camp David
China regarded the meeting of the leaders of South Korea, Japan and the United States at Camp David as a destabilizing action for the Asia-Pacific region. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin denounced attempts to turn the Asia-Pacific region into an arena of geopolitical rivalry at a press conference on Saturday, Al-Mayadeen reported. Wang Wenbin urged the leaders of the United States, South Korea and Japan, who participated in the tripartite meeting at Camp David, to seek peace, not war. In this regard, Wenbing said, "All parties should adhere to the common concept of the security community and true multilateralism and joint cooperation to respond to all kinds of security challenges, in order to cope with the difficult security and international situation."
The representative of China added that no country should try to ensure its own security at the expense of other countries' security interests or regional peace and stability. Wenbing called the Asia-Pacific region "a powerful fortress of peace and development and a promising place for developing cooperation" and said: "This region should not become an arena of geopolitical competition." Friday's talks between Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and South Korean and US Presidents Yoon Seok-yeol and Joe Biden at Camp David focused on the so-called North Korean threat and efforts to exaggerate the need for increased containment. As part of the decisions of the heads of the three countries, they also announced the convening of permanent meetings on North Korea and the holding of annual exercises.
