If today has been 6 years since the military government in Myanmar started the search to evict the Rohingya Muslims from the Rakhine state in the country, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk has said that the international community should not forget the Rohingya and those who shelter them, and Above all, international efforts should be redoubled so that the perpetrators of crimes against the community are held accountable. Turk made the statement on the day that Myanmar's army launched the latest brutal campaign in its decade-long persecution of the Rohingya, a Muslim minority in Rakhine state. In the killing operation against the Rohingya tribe, approximately 10,000 people including women, men, girls, boys and infants were killed, more than 300 villages were destroyed and more than 700,000 Rohingyas fled to Bangladesh in a short period of time.

Mr. Türk has said that until now more than one million Rohingyas have fled persecution in parallel with the system of discrimination and thus have sought asylum in the neighboring country of Bangladesh. More than 100,000 Rohingyas live in refugee camps in Myanmar, where they cannot leave, while others try to make the dangerous journey to flee from Myanmar to Bangladesh, journeys that, however, do not end well. The High Commissioner for Human Rights at the United Nations wants more steps to be taken internationally to get rid of the tragedy that is affecting the Rohingya and those who carry out the atrocities should be brought before the law. Rohingya Muslims seeking asylum after being driven from their homes by Buddhist extremists cooperating with the Myanmar army "Having spent many years trying to end the suffering of the Rohingya, what I wish to see most is for them to return home with dignity, freedom and with better plans as one of the different communities in Myanmar," said Commissioner Türk.

He has said that their rights must be fully respected, and they must also be guaranteed security. He said that the situation is not the same considering the terrible situation in the state of Rakhine and above all, the military government in the country has not shown readiness to solve the existing system of discrimination against the Rohingya. This High Commissioner has said that in the current environment where there are disasters on every side of the world, "the international community must ensure that it does not forget the Rohingya or the communities that shelter them. Humanitarian requests for the Rohingyas in Myanmar and Bangladesh need funding," said Mr. Türk reminding that other countries in the Asian region should expand programs to receive the Rohingyas for permanent residence or temporary shelter.x
