UK Foreign Minister Backs ICC Arrest Warrant for Netanyahu
The British Foreign Minister has claimed that his country respects the decision of the International Criminal Court ICC to arrest the prime minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu and emphasized that, if Netanyahu steps on British soil, then London will arrest him.
The International Criminal Court's (ICC) ruling on the arrest of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu would be respected by the United Kingdom, according British Foreign Minister David Lammy. According to AP news agency sources, Lammy underlined that London will fulfill its duty to enforce the ICC's warrant should Netanyahu approach British soil.
Accused of war crimes and crimes against humanity connected to Israel's activities in Gaza, the ICC issued arrest warrants on November 21, 2024, for Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallent. Under their direction, the court noted other significant violations of international law and the use of hunger as a weapon.
Lammy's comments, meanwhile, did not specifically address the crimes linked to the Israeli government. He mentioned continuous talks with Israeli officials on a possible ceasefire in Gaza and easing of humanitarian supplies delivery to the under siege area.
Globally, the ICC's finding has generated conflicting responses; some countries support the court's ruling. EU foreign policy leader Josep Borrell said even within Europe that the union would uphold and follow ICC rulings against Netanyahu and Gallant.
Given the traditionally intimate links between London and Tel Aviv, the UK's posture signals a notable change. While several European nations have been slow to respond to the ICC decision, Lammy's remarks show a strong posture by the UK in respecting international legal responsibilities. But given rising tensions over the continuing Gaza conflict, the action might sour relations with Israel even further.
