UN: 25 million people in Sudan need humanitarian aid

Justin Brady, Head of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Aid (OCHA) in Sudan has said, "Today, Sudan is one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world. Half of the population of Sudan, i.e. 25 million people, need humanitarian assistance. "

The chief official of OCHA in Sudan in the Port of Sudan in the country, through a video, told journalists on Friday that: "As the fierce fighting continues, the humanitarian crisis is getting worse day by day. Already, almost five million people are one step away and famine. And recent analysis shows that famine is expected in parts of Khartoum and Darfur, especially in hard-to-reach areas."

Brady has said that across Sudan, 18 million people, more than one third of the people are facing severe food shortages. That's 10 million more people than this time last year. And the highest rate ever recorded during Sudan's harvest season.”

He added that, "The fighting is very intense for children, an estimated 730,000 children are suffering from severe malnutrition," and noted that, "Without immediate help, more than 200,000 children may die from life-threatening hunger in the coming weeks and months."

The civil war started in Sudan on April 15 last year between the country's army led by General Abdel Fattah al Burhan and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) under the leadership of Commander Hamdan Dagalo where until now the international mediation efforts of ending the fighting and persuading the rival parties to sit at the negotiating table have hit a rock.

Recently, the United Nations Office for Humanitarian Affairs has announced that more than 13,000 people have been killed and 26,000 others injured in the ongoing war in Sudan since last year (2023).
