US imposes sanctions on 7 individuals and entities linked to Lebanese Hezbollah
The U.S. Treasury Department has introduced fresh sanctions targeting seven individuals and entities associated with the Lebanese resistance group, Hezbollah. These sanctions are specifically aimed at Hezbollah's entities involved in profit-generating activities in South America and Lebanon. The Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) within the U.S. Treasury Department made this announcement in a press release on Tuesday.
Brian Nelson, the undersecretary for terrorism and financial intelligence at the Treasury Department, emphasized the U.S. government's dedication to pursuing individuals and financiers affiliated with Hezbollah, regardless of their location. Nelson stated, “We will continue to root out those who seek to abuse the U.S. and international financial systems to finance and participate in terrorism.”
Established in 1982, Hezbollah is committed to safeguarding Lebanon from perceived threats posed by the United States and the Israeli government, which the group attributes to much of the instability and violence in the region. Due to its success in defending Lebanon's sovereignty and territorial integrity, Hezbollah has garnered significant support within the country's military and political circles. Additionally, Hezbollah plays a role in combatting extremist groups. Through its efforts against foreign-backed anti-Damascus fighters in Syria, Hezbollah has contributed to regional stability.
