USA explores Europe's military strength for possible Ukraine peacekeeping force

The US government has asked Germany and other EU states to state what security guarantees they could provide for Ukraine . According to information from the news agency dpa, the countries are to report, among other things, how many soldiers they could send to Ukraine for a peacekeeping force or training programs after the end of the Russian war of aggression.

It also concerns weapons systems and the question of what support Europe can expect from the USA . The USA has already said that it does not want to send troops to Ukraine itself.

The request comes in connection with plans by US President Donald Trump to negotiate an end to the war in Ukraine with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Trump and high-ranking US government officials, including his vice president JD Vance , have already made it clear that they see the Europeans as having a primary responsibility after a possible end to the war . In the future, they should take responsibility for ensuring that Russia does not attack Ukraine again.

According to diplomats, Chancellor Olaf Scholz wants to meet with other European heads of state and government in Paris on Monday to discuss the situation. However, reports of a special summit in Paris were not initially confirmed by the Élysée Palace. Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski initially announced this on the X platform, but later retracted the post.

On Sunday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned EU leaders not to underestimate the threat posed by Russia. At the Munich Security Conference, he said: " Russia will tear you apart ."
