What is Trump's goal in raising tariffs?

On his second day in the White House, US President Donald Trump threatened to impose 10 percent tariffs on goods imported from China starting February 1.

Russia Today reported that the tariffs on Chinese goods are being imposed due to shipments of fentanyl drugs to Mexico and Canada. He added that he is considering the possibility of imposing similar tariffs on goods imported from the European Union.

The US president said, "We have a $350 billion trade deficit with the European Union. They treat us very badly, so they should expect new tariffs."

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning, responding to Trump's statement, said: "We have always believed that there are no winners in a trade or tariff war, and China will resolutely safeguard its national interests."

And Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, said that US President Donald Trump's announcement to impose tariffs on the EU is a "zero-sum game."

Political experts believe that the statements of the new US president indicate his intention to impose Washington's will on its trading partners and try to disrupt the global economic and trade order.
