American Muslims put forward an ultimatum to Biden in the 2024 elections
American Muslims and some Democratic Party activists told Biden in a letter that unless he takes immediate steps to guarantee a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, they will block financial and election aid. The National Muslim Democratic Council, which includes Democratic Party leaders from swing states such as Michigan, Ohio and Pennsylvania, called on Biden to use his influence with Israel and broker a ceasefire, according to Reuters. In an open letter titled "Ceasefire Ultimatum 2023," Muslim leaders vowed to mobilize Muslim voters to prevent them from endorsing, supporting or voting for any candidate who supports Israeli attacks on Palestinians. The council wrote to Biden that the government's unconditional support, including funding and weapons, played a major role in the continuation of violence that resulted in civilian casualties and undermined the confidence of voters who had previously voted for Biden. The organization is co-founded by former U.S. Representative Keith Ellison, Minnesota's attorney general and the first Muslim to serve in the U.S. Congress, and Indiana Representative Andre Carson. The letter is another sign of growing anger and frustration in American Muslim communities over Biden's approach of not condemning the Zionist regime's attack on the Gaza Strip. About 70 percent of Muslim Americans supported Biden in the 2020 election, according to Jilani Hussain, executive director of CAIR, the Council on American-Islamic Relations in Minnesota. Palestinian American lawmaker Rashida Tlaib criticized Biden's support for Israel's "campaign of genocide in Palestine" by posting a video on X on Monday and said: "Don't count on our vote in 2024."
