Armenia Reaffirms Support for Cyprus on 50th Anniversary of Northern Cyprus Occupation

The Republic of Armenia has reiterated its unwavering support for the Republic of Cyprus on the 50th anniversary of the occupation of Northern Cyprus. In a statement issued by the Armenian Embassy in Greece, Armenia reaffirmed its commitment to peace and stability in the region and its solidarity with Cyprus in seeking a just and lasting resolution to the longstanding conflict.

"Armenia remains committed to peace and stability in the region and will continue to work with its international partners to face these challenges," the statement from the embassy emphasized. This expression of support underscores the enduring relationship between Armenia and Cyprus, highlighting Armenia's consistent backing of Cyprus's efforts to resolve its national issue.

The Armenian statement comes at a poignant time, marking five decades since the Turkish invasion of Cyprus, which began on July 20, 1974, and concluded on August 18, 1974. This invasion followed a coup d'état in Cyprus and resulted in Turkish forces occupying approximately 40% of the island, leading to a division that persists to this day.

The commemoration of this anniversary has been accompanied by various international reactions. Leaders and officials from around the world have echoed calls for renewed efforts towards reconciliation and the reunification of Cyprus. The European Union, in particular, has reiterated its stance on the necessity of a comprehensive settlement in line with UN resolutions, emphasizing respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Cyprus.

Cyprus's President, Nicos Anastasiades, in his anniversary address, called for intensified diplomatic efforts and expressed hope for progress in reunification talks. "The memory of the invasion and subsequent division serves as a reminder of the importance of persistence and resilience in our quest for peace and justice," Anastasiades stated.

In this context, Armenia’s reaffirmation of support not only reflects its historical ties with Cyprus but also underscores a broader commitment to regional stability and international law. As a member of various international bodies, including the United Nations and the Council of Europe, Armenia's stance aligns with global efforts to address and resolve such protracted conflicts.

The ongoing occupation and division of Cyprus remain a significant issue in international relations, impacting regional geopolitics and EU-Turkey relations. Despite numerous rounds of negotiations over the years, a comprehensive solution has yet to be achieved, leaving the island's future in a state of uncertainty.

Armenia’s solidarity with Cyprus on this anniversary reinforces the shared values and mutual support that define their bilateral relationship, as both nations continue to advocate for peace, stability, and justice in their respective regions.
