Azerbaijani President Calls for Reform of UN and Security Council Structure
At the Baku meeting of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the Non-Aligned Movement the President of Azerbaijan called for reform of the structure of the United Nations and the Security Council. Ilham Aliyev believes that the composition of the UN Security Council does not reflect the current realities and should be expanded by representatives of the Non-Aligned Movement, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and the African Union.
"At present, international organizations, particularly the UN, do not meet humanity's expectations. The UN must inevitably undergo serious reforms. The UN Security Council is a relic of the past and does not reflect current reality. We advocate enlargement of the Security Council to make it more representative and geographically equitable. I am glad that today there is a growing consensus in the world on this," the Azerbaijani president said, speaking Wednesday at a ministerial meeting of the Coordinating Bureau of the Non-Aligned Movement.
Aliyev stressed that countries chairing the Non-Aligned Movement, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and the African Union should have rotating veto seats in the UN Security Council.A ministerial meeting of the Coordinating Bureau of the Non-Aligned Movement began Wednesday in Baku.
