China's Foreign Ministry has accused US President Donald Trump's administration of pursuing "double-faced" policies and vowed to "resolutely confront" the growing pressure of sanctions, as tensions between the two economic powers continue to escalate.

Speaking on the sidelines of China's annual parliament session on Friday, Foreign Minister Wang Yi criticized Washington for imposing "punitive tariffs" despite Beijing acting as a reliable international partner and helping to tackle the fentanyl drug crisis that is plaguing the United States.

"If one side blindly exerts pressure, China will firmly oppose it," Wang warned, adding, "No country can think that it can suppress China on the one hand while maintaining good relations with China on the other."

Since Trump took office, the United States has doubled tariffs on all Chinese goods, from 10 to 20 percent, exacerbating the existing tariff pain on thousands of Chinese products.

The trade war between the US and China is intensifying.

Last month, the US President also ordered new tariffs on goods from China, Mexico, and Canada, citing the need to protect US interests and pointing to concerns about trade imbalances, illegal immigration, and the influx of drugs into the US.

The Chinese government has responded to the blows by increasing tariffs ranging from 10% to 15% on various US goods, including agricultural products and energy products.
