Citizens of the United States and England are sentenced to death in the DRC for a coup attempt
A military court in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) on Friday sentenced 37 people, including three American citizens, to death for their involvement in an attempt to overthrow the central African government earlier this year.
A military court in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) on Friday sentenced 37 people, including three American citizens, to death for their involvement in an attempt to overthrow the central African government earlier this year.
These people have been found guilty of involvement in crime, carrying out attacks, terrorism and also financing terrorism. In addition to the Americans, three other people who are citizens of England, Belgium and Canada are also among those sentenced to be hanged.
The case started in July and related to the failed coup in May led by Christian Malanga, who launched attacks on the presidential palace and also the residence of Vital Kamerhe, the speaker of the country's Parliament.
Malanga was shot and killed while trying to evade arrest shortly after launching the attempted coup through his social network. All those found guilty have five days to appeal.
President Felix Tshisekedi of the Democratic Republic of the Congo was sworn in for a second term in January after an election that was marred by controversy. West and Central Africa have experienced a series of revolutions in recent years.
