Concerns about flooding in Sudan following an attack on a dam
The Sudanese army and the fighters of the Rapid Support Forces RSF have blamed each other for the attack that destroyed the bridge in the Jebel Awlia dam south of Khartoum. After the attack, there has been a great concern about the occurrence of floods. More reports say that, the extent of the damage done in the dam has not yet been determined unless major damage threatens to cause flooding. Recently, fighting has increased in the area of Jebel Awlia, a poor district in the south of Khartoum province, causing thousands of people to be left homeless. Earlier this month, the RSF said it had captured an army camp in the area. In recent weeks, a bridge in the capital Khartoum and an important oil depot were destroyed in attacks and the two sides blamed each other for the attacks.
The struggle for power in Sudan began on April 15 between the Army and the RSF; and international mediation efforts to end the war and fighting and bring the conflicting parties to the negotiating table have so far been fruitless. Meanwhile, the number of people fleeing unrest in Darfur state in Sudan is reportedly increasing following a new wave of ethnic killings. People fleeing to Chad from Sudan, describe a new increase in ethnic killings in the state of West Darfur, when the RSF militants captured the main army camp in the capital of the state, El Geneina. RSF militants have been fighting the official army since April this year in a conflict that has forced many Darfur residents to flee their homes.
