Countries criticize US for blocking Gaza ceasefire

The US permanent representative to the United Nations Security Council, which is the current head of the council, has refused to respond to criticism from other members about the country's repeated vetoes to block a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, and has instead accused other member states of being hopeless.

This comes after representatives of various countries around the world criticized the United Nations Security Council for convening a meeting to review the situation in Gaza, under the chairmanship of the United States, which is the main opponent of the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

Vassily Nebenzia, Russia's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, has said that the situation in Gaza has worsened day by day since last year, but despite this situation, the United States has vetoed several resolutions calling for a ceasefire in the region.

China's Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Geng Shuang, also said that the Security Council's efforts to end the Gaza crisis have always been hampered by one permanent member of the council, and last Wednesday the UN General Assembly passed two resolutions calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and supporting the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), but in this week alone, hundreds of people have been martyred in Gaza. Meanwhile, Riyad Mansour, the Palestinian Authority's representative to the United Nations, said that more than 150,000 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip have been killed, injured or maimed by Israeli attacks, most of them women and children. He added: "The Security Council has completely failed to address these crimes, and due to the repeated US vetoes, all ceasefire resolutions have failed."

Since 1970, the United States has vetoed 49 times in the Security Council against resolutions related to Israel, the last of which was the Washington government's veto against a draft resolution to end the war and genocide in Gaza.
