Egypt and the UN discuss the Syrian crisis and ways to resolve it
Sameh Shoukry, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Egypt and Geir O. Pedersen, Special Envoy of the United Nations in the case of Syria have held talks and discussed the ongoing events in Syria and ways to solve them. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Egypt has said in its statement that, among the issues discussed by the two are the results of the first meeting of the Arab Ministerial Relations Committee on Syria, which was held on August 15 in Cairo. The committee, which was created by the Arab League, includes the Foreign Ministers of Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Iraq, Lebanon and the head of the Arab League. Sameh Shoukry has emphasized the intention of the committee to provide a permanent solution to the Syrian crisis, protect the unity of the country's land and maintain stability in the country. Shoukry and Pedersen have also agreed to meet again on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly meetings in September this year.
After nearly 12 years of suspension, finally in May of this year, Syria was restored to its membership in the Arab League based in Cairo, Egypt. When Syrian President Bashar al Assad participated in the Arab League meeting in Saudi Arabia in May 2023, Syria's membership of the Arab League was suspended at the end of 2011 when the Syrian conflict broke out, which led some Arab countries to recall their ambassadors from Damascus. a move that was strongly opposed by the Syrian leadership. The issue of Syria returning to the League of Arab States has pleased many parties inside and outside the region of the Islamic and Arab world and has shown how the resistance of the people of Syria and their government protected the Arab and Islamic nation and survived in the face of brutal plots of enemies.
