The opposition in Nigeria appealed after the court confirmed the victory of President Tinubu
The main opposition candidates for the presidency in Nigeria have said through their lawyers that they will appeal against the court decision that confirmed the victory of President Bola Tinubu in the February presidential election which was allegedly controversial. Candidates Atiku Abubakar of the People's Democratic Party and Peter Obi of the Labor Party, who came in second and third place in the election, filed a case in court demanding that the election be annulled for allegedly stealing votes and agents failing to publish the results of the election through the Internet.
But Nigeria's Court of Appeal on Wednesday dismissed their pleas in a judgment that was read for more than 11 hours. Obi's lawyer, Livy Uzoukwu, told reporters that his team will fully review the judgment and appeal to the Supreme Court. An appeal to the Supreme Court in the country should be submitted within 14 days from the date of the court's decision and the High Court has 60 days to hear the case and give its decision. Atiku Abubakar Bola Ahmed Tinubu was sworn in May this year as the fifth President of Nigeria since the return to democracy in the country in 1999; while facing many economic and security challenges.
Tinubu was announced as the winner of the presidential election held in March this year. The Independent Electoral Commission of Nigeria (INEC) declared Tinubu who contested through the ruling party All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner of the presidential election, with 8.8 million votes, followed by his nearest competitor Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). who got 6.9 million votes.
