EU Council: support for Italy on the issue of migrants

  The President of the EU Council, Charles Michel, said that Italy "is not alone on the issue of immigrants, ... which will be on the agenda at the informal meeting of the European Council in Granada". He then specified that the issue of migrants is "a challenge municipality of the Union" and adding that he is "in close contact with Giorgia Meloni". Meanwhile, the EU Court rejects France's rejections at the border, while in Italy the landings of migrants continue in Lampedusa. Overnight, 65 arrived on the island : 18 were tracked down by the carabinieri on the beach of Cala Croce and 57 were transferred from the Cassiopea ship onto the Capitaneria patrol boat Cp327 which took them to the Favarolo pier.

There are now 1,161 people in the hotspot, including 295 unaccompanied minors. The Court of Justice of the European Union has rejected France for the rejections of migrants at the border with Italy: "they are illegal". In a ruling on the appeal of several French associations, the Luxembourg judges highlight that "the EU 'repatriations' directive ' must always be applied, even in the case of internal border controls" temporarily reintroduced by a member state. Irregular migrants, highlights the EU Court, must therefore be able to "benefit from a certain deadline to voluntarily leave the territory. Forced removal occurs only as a last resort."
