EU observers say Mozambique's election results were changed without reason
European Union election monitors have identified "unreasonable manipulation" of some results in Mozambique's general election, amid accusations by the main opposition candidate that the government killed his lawyer.
European Union election monitors have identified "unreasonable manipulation" of some results in Mozambique's general election, amid accusations by the main opposition candidate that the government killed his lawyer.
The statement by the EU election observers was released today, Tuesday, one day after the citizens of Mozambique staged a protest against what is said to be fraud in the presidential and parliamentary elections of October 9.
"The European Union Election Observation Team [EU EOM] ... has identified flaws during the counting of votes and unfounded changes in election results at polling stations and at the district level," said a statement by EU observers.
The team has urged the electoral authorities in the Southern African country to count the votes "in a transparent and reliable manner, and to ensure the monitoring of the results of the polling stations".
The violence that erupted after the elections in Mozambique continued to hit the country yesterday Monday as calls for the restoration of stability were made.
Mozambique's security forces yesterday had to use tear gas in the capital Maputo to disperse the protesters. The protest has now taken the shape of a boycott of government activities after the call for a general strike issued by opposition leader Venancio Mondlane to condemn fraud during the presidential election.
Mondlane has also accused the government of being involved in the murder of lawyer Elvino Dias and parliamentary candidate through the Podemos party Paulo Guambe in Mozambique.
The two were killed after their car was surrounded by other cars in the capital city of Maputo on Saturday, just a week after Mondlane participated in the general election on the 9th of October.
There has been a fear of political unrest in the country especially after the initial results showed that the candidate of the ruling party, Frelimo, will win with a majority of votes.
