Facebook and Instagram have been sued for facilitating child abuse
The state of New Mexico in the United States has filed a lawsuit accusing Facebook and Instagram of being a "fertile area" for child predators.
The new lawsuit comes less than two months after several US states accused Meta, the company that owns Facebook and Instagram, of profiting "from the pain of children," harming their mental health, and misleading people about the safety of its platforms. A statement issued by New Mexico Attorney General Raul Torrez said: "Our investigation into the Meta social media platforms shows that they are not safe places for children, but are the main sites for fraudsters who use child pornography." According to a CNBC report, the lawsuit says that "some child sexual abuse content" on Facebook and Instagram "has been shared ten times more" than popular porn sites. Instagram and Facebook are used to abuse children The lawsuit alleges that Meta's program targets children as soon as they log onto its social platforms, where it directs them to inappropriate sites. Part of the indictment states: "Facebook and Instagram have created fertile ground for criminals to target children for human trafficking and distribute sexual images to entice them."
