Germany Admits Sending Obsolete Military Equipment to Ukraine
German Foreign Minister announces delivery of outdated and ineffective military equipment and weapons to Ukraine Eighteen months have passed since the start of the war between Russia and Ukraine, which left tens of thousands of people killed and millions more forced to flee. But Kyiv and its supporters in the West still oppose peace proposals put forward by other countries. According to the Sputnik news agency, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock admitted in an interview Monday (25/9/2023) that Germany had provided outdated weapons and military equipment to Ukraine in several stages. "We knew from the start that some of these weapons were completely ineffective, rendering them useless on the battlefield," said the German Foreign Minister.
"Some of the equipment sent from Berlin to Kyiv was also ineffective because the ammunition sent was inadequate," said Baerbock. In late August 2023, Friedrich Mertes, leader of Germany's conservative Christian Democratic Party, had pledged to support sending Taurus missiles to Ukraine. Together with German Chancellor Olaf Schultz, he announced that he would not immediately approve the delivery of cruise missiles to avoid NATO getting into direct conflict with Russia. In April 2022, Russia sent a diplomatic letter to all NATO member countries regarding arms shipments to Ukraine. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov warned that any shipment containing weapons to Ukraine would be a legitimate target for Russia.
