Guterres calls on Israel to stop violating resolution 1701 in southern Lebanon

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called on Israel to end its occupation of Lebanese territory and military operations inside the country, stressing that these actions violate Security Council Resolution 1701.

Guterres stressed - in a statement published by his press office during his visit to the headquarters of the United Nations Interim Force in Naqoura - that the Lebanese army has begun to deploy in greater numbers in southern Lebanon supported by the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon, UNIFIL, stressing the importance of this cooperation to strengthen stability in the region.

United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701 was issued on August 11, 2006, after the war that broke out between Hezbollah and Israel, with the aim of ending the war and reaching a ceasefire agreement between the two sides.

Among the elements of the resolution are an immediate cessation of hostilities between Hezbollah and Israel and the deployment of Lebanese army forces and UNIFIL forces in the south of the country to the Litani River, to strengthen stability.

Guterres has stressed the need for all parties to respect United Nations resolutions to ensure regional stability and prevent an escalation of military conflicts in the area.

The Gaza Civil Defense Department announced on Friday that at least 101 Palestinians, including 27 children and 31 women, have been martyred in Israeli attacks since the ceasefire agreement was announced on Wednesday.

Another 264 Palestinians have been injured in the Israeli attacks. The Israeli occupation has carried out these attacks at a time when there are no signs of abating the Israeli offensive against Gaza.

In the northern Gaza Strip, nine members of a Palestinian journalist's family have been martyred, including women and young children.

In addition, two other Palestinians were martyred in an Israeli airstrike in the al Balad area in the city of Jabalia in northern Gaza.

Israeli warplanes have been pounding the town of Jabalia since the ceasefire in Gaza was announced on Wednesday. At least 20 people were killed in the town of Jabalia in Israeli airstrikes on Thursday.

The area east of the city of Khan Yunis was also not spared from the brutal Israeli attacks, where five civilians were killed in an attack targeting a civilian residence.
