“We must demand that all parties comply with their obligations under international humanitarian law, exercise constant caution when conducting military operations and spare civilians,” Guterres said. He called on the parties to protect hospitals and also respect the sanctity of UN sites where more than 600,000 Palestinians are now sheltering. “The relentless bombing of the Gaza Strip by Israeli forces, the number of civilian casualties and the massive destruction of neighborhoods continues to increase and is deeply alarming. “I mourn the loss of dozens of UN colleagues who worked for UNRWA – sadly, at least 35 and counting – who have been killed in the bombing of the Gaza Strip over the past two weeks,” he said. “Protecting civilians does not mean ordering the evacuation of more than a million people to the south, where there is no shelter, no food, no water, no medicine, no fuel, and then continuing to bomb the south itself. “I am deeply concerned by the clear violations of international humanitarian law that we are witnessing in the Gaza Strip,” Guterres said. The Secretary General said that none of the parties to the armed conflict “can be above international humanitarian law.”
