Guterres urged to support the supply of cross-border aid to the northwest of Syria
Following disapproval of resolutions related to the Bab al-Hawa crossing point on the Syrian-Turkish border, the UN Secretary-General called for increased support for the continuation of cross-border aid supplies to northwestern Syria.
António Guterres, expressing dissatisfaction with the failure of the UN Security Council to reach an agreement to extend the permission for cross-border operations of this aid organization in Syria, asked all members of the Security Council to increase support for their efforts to continue providing cross-border assistance to millions of people in need in northwestern Syria for as long as possible.
At a meeting of the UN Security Council last Tuesday, Russia vetoed a Western resolution to extend the organization's cross-border assistance mechanism through the Bab al-Hawa border checkpoint in Syria.
The SAR government has always stressed that the Hayat Tahrir ash-Sham terrorist group, by confiscating humanitarian aid, does not allow the people to access it. Any humanitarian assistance to the Syrian people must be provided to people in need through official channels through the government of this country.
A UN relief operation that has been delivering items such as food, medicine and shelter in northwest Syria since 2014 ended last Monday. Guterres demanded an extension of the operation for another 12 months.
