Japan: We will supply Ukraine with non-lethal equipment

The Japanese Prime Minister said at a NATO summit yesterday Wednesday that Tokyo would supply Ukraine with non-lethal equipment such as drone detection systems. The Japanese government has previously announced that in recent decades, due to the general pacifist policy and restrictions, within the framework of the Constitution, which does not allow participation in military operations in other countries of the world, it does not seek to provide military assistance to Ukraine and will only supply non-military equipment to Kiev.

However, in mid-May, under pressure from the United States to continue the war in Ukraine, Tokyo deviated from this position and announced to Kyiv that it would send TNT explosives to Ukraine. This is at a time when news broke earlier that month of a delivery of 100 military vehicles to Ukraine from Japan.

The Japanese government now claims that funds for UAV detection systems will come from $30 million Tokyo has contributed to the NATO fund.According to Japanese news agency Kyodo, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida attended a two-day NATO summit in Vilnius, Lithuania's capital, and then said that Tokyo intended to supply Ukraine with non-lethal equipment such as UAV detection systems.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who attended the Vilnius summit in hopes of his country joining a military alliance (NATO), said Western security guarantees should not replace Ukraine's NATO membership.
