Guterres warns of deteriorating humanitarian situation in Sudan
The UN Secretary General warned that the humanitarian situation in Sudan is catastrophic.According to Al Jazeera, António Guterres said: "The situation in Sudan has led to the death of civilians and any further escalation of tension will have disastrous consequences for this country and region."Guterres added: "I ask everyone who has influence to take action to bring peace and support efforts to end the violence in Sudan."
Referring to the catastrophic humanitarian situation in Sudan, the UN Secretary-General stressed: "We support the Sudanese people and efforts to restore democracy and build a secure and peaceful future."UN Emergency Relief Coordinator Martin Griffiths said on Monday evening that 16 million people in Sudan (a third of the Sudanese population) are in need of humanitarian assistance.
Emphasizing the need to end the war in Sudan and protect the country's hospitals and basic water and electricity infrastructure, he added: "The conflict in Sudan is forcing UN agencies and donors to stop many humanitarian programs across the country."The UN Emergency Relief Coordinator also said he was horrified by the death of three aid workers in Sudan.
EU High Representative for Foreign Policy Josep Borrell said on Monday evening that the EU ambassador had been attacked at his residence in Sudan.Borrell added: "There is an urgent need for a ceasefire in Sudan to provide space for mediation and security for civilians." the UN mission in Sudan recently reported that over the past 3 days of clashes between the army and the rapid reaction forces in that country, 180 people were killed and 1,800 were injured.
Clashes began on Saturday morning between the army and the rapid reaction forces in power, and international mediations to end them and bring the conflicting parties to the negotiating table have so far been unsuccessful.
