Imran Khan was arrested after a court in Pakistan sentenced him to 3 years in prison
Police have arrested Pakistan's former prime minister Imran Khan in the eastern city of Lahore after a court sentenced him to three years in prison for illegally selling government gifts. Khan has been accused of abusing his post as prime minister from 2018 to 2022, allegedly buying and selling government-owned gifts that were received during his visits abroad and worth more than 140 million Pakistani rupees (US$497,500). Reading the sentence against the former prime minister, Judge Humayun Dilawar said, "His dishonesty has been proven beyond any doubt.
He has been found guilty of corrupt practices by deliberately concealing the benefits he got from the national treasury". The sentence handed down against Imran Khan also includes a fine of 100,000 rupees ($355) which, if not paid, could mean a further six months in jail. Imran Khan being escorted by the Police after his arrest, his lawyer Intezar Panjotha has told the media that the police arrested Khan at his residence in Lahore. Pakistani media reported the presence of police surrounding the house of the former prime minister of Pakistan after the verdict against him yesterday.
Panjotha has said that they will appeal to the Supreme Court against the sentence. In a video recorded before his arrest and posted on the X social network, formerly known as Twitter, Khan called on his followers to take to the streets. "I have only one request, only one appeal to you. Do not remain silent in your homes. The struggle I am waging is not for myself, it is for my nation, for you. For the future of your children," said the former prime minister of Pakistan. Imran Khan has continued to address his followers saying: "if you don't defend your rights, you will live the life of slaves and slaves have no life"....
