IOM: The wave of refugees is increasing in Kordofan following the fighting between the Sudanese army and the SPLM

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has announced that South Kordofan State, in southern Sudan, is witnessing a large wave of people evacuate their homes due to the fighting between the Sudanese army and the Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM).

IOM: The wave of refugees is increasing in Kordofan following the fighting between the Sudanese army and the SPLM

The statement issued by the organization said that fighting broke out between the army of the Sudan People's Liberation Movement-North, led by Abdelaziz Adam al-Hilu, in the village of Al-Kwaik, in the rural area in the east of Sudan, in the state of South Kordofan.

The International Organization for Migration has quoted its field teams as saying that the fighting has forced many people to relocate in the area.

IOM said that about 204 families, most of whom had been displaced from the town of Kadugli in South Kordofan, have been forced to flee and seek shelter in rural villages.

The international organization has reported that the situation is still worrying and it is impossible to predict what will happen in the future.

Over the past four years, the Sudanese government and the SPLM-N extended a ceasefire agreement in areas under their control.

SPLM-N fighters are active in South Kordofan and Blue Nile states, and have been fighting with the Sudanese army since 2011, in order to gain special status in the two states.
