Ireland and Spain want to recognize the state of Palestine as soon as possible
Irish and Spanish leaders Simon Harris and Pedro Sanchez held a joint press conference in Dublin last night where they confirmed the intention to "recognize Palestine as a state as soon as possible, when the conditions are right", according to Sanchez.
Irish Prime Minister Harris said for his part that the two nations are "committed to the vision of a two-state solution to the conflict, and of Israel and Palestine living side by side in peace and security."
Harris, among other things, said: "Spain and Ireland have long been interested in this region and I know that we are committed to the two-state solution between Israel and Palestine."
“As we move forward, we want as many others as we can to weigh in on this decision with a clear voice. The people of Israel deserve a secure and peaceful future, as do the people of Palestine. Sovereignty and equal respect in the region," added Harris.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez stressed that the immediate ceasefire is 'an urgent need':
“Ireland and Spain think that the immediate ceasefire is an emergency, for the passage of aid to Gaza, and the release of hostages. The violence must stop humanitarian factors from acting", said the Spanish Prime Minister adding: "The international community cannot help Palestine if it does not recognize its existence, therefore it must be recognized as a state as soon as possible, when the conditions of be suitable".
