At least 15 people have been killed and about 35 others injured in a car and gun attack that occurred late last night in the US city of New Orleans on a street where New Year's celebrations were taking place.
The attacker's name has been given as Shamsud Din Jabbar. It has also been revealed that Jabbar is a 42-year-old American citizen from Texas, and was a retired military officer. According to an FBI statement, the detective police have determined that Jabbar did not carry out the attack alone.
The attacker used a white pickup truck to attack people celebrating the New Year on Bourbon Street, an area popular with tourists and a major party hub as the holiday season approaches, especially on New Year's Eve.
Witnesses said the vehicle drove through barriers blocking the road and rammed into people, before the attacker got out and started shooting at police officers present in the area and was killed by police in the incident.
