Israel: 44% of young people suffer from anxiety
A new report has revealed that 44% of young Israelis suffer from constant anxiety and depression, while 20% tend to commit suicide. The report, released Tuesday (June 5) by Israeli media, covers the year 2022 and was produced by ELEM, a nonprofit watchdog monitoring at-risk youth.
"They shared feelings of hopelessness, exhaustion, disconnection and lack of motivation at home, school, parks and on social media," the report said, adding that around 19% reported receiving emotional therapy from psychologists, psychiatrists and other therapists.
"The hardships young people have faced and deepened during the COVID pandemic have not diminished," adds the ELEM report, which was presented to Israeli President Isaac Herzog on Tuesday.
According to the report, 18% of young Israelis also said they had experienced sexual abuse, while 20% said they had experienced domestic violence, some of which had been going on for years.
The report further indicates that violence among young Israelis has intensified in recent years. He said 26% of young people said they had experienced violence outside their homes, including serious abuse. The sharp increase in tendencies among Israeli settlers to commit suicide has raised alarm bells among Israeli authorities and their Western patrons.
“We need to wake up. Our children, especially those at risk who have no family, support system or person to care for them, face the consequences of increasingly dangerous phenomena,” said the CEO of ELEM, Tali Erez.
Earlier, the Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth reported that suicide among Israeli teenagers and young people aged 15 to 24 has increased by 75%."The number of suicides in this age group increased significantly between 2016 and 2020," the newspaper said.
Yedioth Ahronoth reported that there was also an alarming increase in suicide cases among the Israeli military, adding that 14 Israeli forces committed suicide in 2022, which is the highest figure in the past five years.
IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi has previously described the skyrocketing number of suicides among Israeli troops as a "dangerous and frightening" challenge for the Tel regime's armed forces. -Aviv.Halevi ordered the competent authorities to redouble their efforts to resolve the problem.
However, despite the efforts of responsible parties to deal with this phenomenon, suicide remains the leading cause of death, with at least 30 Israeli servicemen committing suicide each year, according to the IDF.
Official data from the Information and Research Center of the Knesset (Israeli Parliament) shows that the Tel Aviv regime registers 500 suicides every year, 100 of them among young people in the 15-24 age group.
The Israeli army has seen an increase in the number of soldiers killed in uniform over the past year - 44 compared to 31 the previous year - as well as an increase in the number of suicides, according to statistics released by the army more early this year.
