Many Kenyan nurses lose the opportunity to work in the UK by failing English
More than half of Kenyan nurses have missed the opportunity to work in the UK due to their lack of English. Of the 701 nurses who applied to join British hospitals, only 76 passed while 79 failed the English language exams. According to Kenya's Minister of Health, Susan Nakhumicha, only 424 nurses met the conditions to fill out the application forms while 277 others failed. He said: "76 who qualified will leave the country tomorrow Thursday, August 24, 2023." According to a report released by the Kenyan Ministry of Health and the National Nursing Council (NCK), 198 nurses failed to take the International English Language Proficiency Test (IELTS) or the Hospital Language Proficiency Test (OET). At least 79 failed the IELTS exams while 200 failed the computer-based test (CBT) and 77 failed the CBT. In 2022, only 19 nurses out of 3,329 others left the country for England after the Fourth President of Kenya, Uhuru Kenyatta, and former British Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, signed an agreement. The former Minister of Health, Mutahi Kagwe, explained that out of 300 health workers, only 10 passed the English exams.
