Netanyahu Reportedly Favors Trump’s Return to White House Amid US Election
As the US presidential election draws near, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is reportedly hoping for Donald Trump's victory, given their close ties and Trump’s historically supportive policies toward Israel. Analysts suggest that Trump’s previous administration provided Netanyahu with diplomatic gains, while his isolationist stance might allow the Israeli leader more leeway in managing conflicts in Gaza and Lebanon.
Under Trump’s presidency, the US embassy moved to Jerusalem, Israel’s capital, and the US recognized Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights. Trump also brokered the Abraham Accords, facilitating normalization between Israel and several Arab states. Unlike his Democratic counterparts, including current President Joe Biden, Trump has been perceived as less restrictive regarding Israeli actions on Iran’s nuclear activities, a key concern for Netanyahu.
Trump’s popularity remains high among Israelis, with 68% favoring him over his opponent, Vice President Kamala Harris, who has also expressed strong support for Israel’s security. Still, some Israeli analysts, such as Nadav Tamir, caution that Trump’s growing alliances with isolationist Republicans could alter US involvement in the region. Despite this, Netanyahu is reportedly willing to take that risk, prioritizing a return to the cooperative approach he experienced during Trump’s first term.
