OR: Africa has a shortage of 15 million teachers

The African continent is facing a shortage of more than 15 million teachers. This was said by Mohammed Belhocine, Commissioner for Education, Science, Technology and Innovation of the African Union in a press conference on the sidelines of the 45th Ordinary Session of the AU General Council , in Accra, Ghana.

Belhocine has warned that the shortage of teachers will have a negative impact on the ability of the African continent to achieve its goals in the fields of education and welfare.

The AU commissioner has noted that 90 billion dollars are needed to close the gap so that African countries can reach the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030, as agreed by the United Nations.

"Today, it is more proud to be a businessman than to be a teacher, this gap is the cause of the great shortage of teachers," said the Commissioner for Education, Science, Technology and Innovation of the African Union.

Recently, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) explained in its report that there is a shortage of teachers in the world and called on all countries to take action to deal with the issue that the UN institution called "a global crisis ".

UNESCO says 44 million more teachers are needed to reach the global goal of primary and secondary education by 2030, as well as about 15 million teachers are needed for sub-Saharan Africa alone.

Teachers' unions say that poor working conditions, many riots and low wages are among the main reasons that caused teachers to leave their jobs in 79 countries in the world.
