Pope Francis Calls Trump’s Deportation Plan “Shameful”

Pope Francis has criticized former President Donald Trump’s plan to deport migrants, calling it “shameful.” In an interview with the Italian program Che Tempo Che Fa on Sunday, the Pope said, “If this is true, it’s shameful, because poor people, who have nothing, will be forced to pay the price for others’ mistakes. This is not a solution; it’s not the way to resolve problems.”

The Pope’s remarks come amid widespread speculation that Trump’s administration will move to restrict legal migration pathways and initiate mass deportations early in his presidential term. According to The Wall Street Journal, the Trump administration plans to begin large-scale deportations on Tuesday, marking his first full day in office. The initiative reportedly involves 200 officers from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Migration experts and advocacy organizations anticipate that the Trump administration will expand its authority through executive orders, administrative measures, and budget requests to Congress. They also expect the administration to pressure elected officials nationwide to support the deportation program.

Both Fox News and ABC have reported that Trump plans to sign over 200 executive orders on Monday, just hours after fully assuming office at the White House. These orders will reportedly include measures to officially close U.S. borders to undocumented and illegal migrants, declare a state of emergency at the border, and designate cartels as foreign terrorist organizations.

Additionally, Trump intends to reinstate the “Remain in Mexico” policy, requiring asylum seekers to stay in Mexico while their immigration cases are processed. These measures are expected to significantly reshape U.S. immigration policies in the coming months.
