Early yesterday at least 45 people were confirmed dead when their villages were washed away by water near Mai Mahiu, about 60 kilometers from the capital, Nairobi. However, the Kenya Red Cross Society has stated that 50 people lost their lives in the floods.
President Ruto has said that the local governments have criticized his government's measures to deal with the floods as being like a chameleon. However, the President of Kenya has defended the measures currently being implemented by his government during this flood period.
When asked if Kenya will immediately declare the floods a national disaster, President Ruto said that his first task is to ensure that the affected areas get what they need.
Experts say that more rain is expected to fall in Kenya; therefore the government of that country has decided that schools should continue to be closed. More than 130,000 people have been forced to evacuate their homes due to the floods while many families have taken shelter in schools.
